In a video tutorial, Patrick demonstrates how to construct a heavy-duty potting bench for use in your Victory Garden designed with sturdy 2×4 construction and 4×4 legs. The bottom shelf is deliberately situated low for easy insertion and removal of bins containing potting soil. The top shelf, constructed with 2x4s and 1x4s, is highly durable and covered with 5/4 inch by six deck boards for a smooth finish with rounded edges.

To build the potting bench, begin by cutting the required parts from pressure-treated lumber or any suitable outdoor wood. The required lumber includes three 5/4×6″x10’s, two 5/4×6″x8’s, three 2x4x12′, one 2x4x8′, one 1x4x10′, one 1x4x8′ and two 4x4x8’s. Coated screws are needed: one pound of three-inch screws and one pound of two-inch screws.
Tools for the project include a circular saw, a drill, an orbital sander, and optionally a jigsaw. Once the lumber is cut to size, pre-drill holes using a countersink drill bit. Then, start assembling the bench. Pre-drilling is recommended to prevent the wood from cracking when screws are inserted near the edges.
The assembly process begins with the table top, followed by the front and back legs, center support, and bottom frame. For water damage protection, optional rubber feet can be added to the bottom of the 4×4 legs. Subsequently, the bottom shelf boards are attached, followed by the tabletop.
Precise measurement is essential for the backboard, which needs to be cut accurately to fit around the 4×4 legs. After making these cuts, sand the inside of the square cutouts to eliminate splinters and rough edges.
The final step involves assembling the top shelf, where three 1 by 4’s are combined with the two long 2 by 4’s and three 2 by 4’s seven inches long. The assembled top shelf is then attached to the bench. With the application of finishing touches, the potting bench is ready for use.
